Abstract: 

The topic presented deals with the specific NPP seismic design issue of the Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) for the above-ground and buried liquid retaining structures. Remarks on fluid-structure interaction are given along with the best practicesand methodologies, such asinternational codes and standards, requirements as well as specific recommendations for nuclear installation are presented and described. Specifically, aspects related to the boundary condition and EOS for the material behavior are treated based on the best EU and International experience. Case study explaining the method for solving FSI problems in cylindrical and rectangular tanks (looks like plant water tank or spent fuel pool) are provided with practical advice. Numerical examples of FSI in (liquid) partially filled tank with and without“baffle” and resulting from multi-events, like tsunami with earthquake, are provided.

About the speaker

Prof. R. Lo Frano (F) is App. Full Professor at the DICI University of Pisa in Nuclear Plants.She has focused her research studies on the safetybehavior of NPP structure and components subjected to external/internal accident events and decommissioning and RW management issues.Her research refers mainly to the safety and design of nuclear plants, including LTO and ageing of nuclear items, RWs characterization, Package-Disposal-Storage analysis, innovative monitoring devices for transport and storage, analysis and characterization of nuclear items, materials and waste forms, tritium issues. Research investigation covers the fission and fusion field.
